Watercolor basics with Lisa is a series of one time classes that cover the basics of watercolor painting. In this class, you’ll learn three watercolor painting techniques and how to add doodles to your watercolor paintings. During the class, you'll paint circles/planets on the paper. Using three watercolor techniques I'll show you how to create a variety of effects. Next, we'll dry the paint using a hairdryer, so that we can add accents to the planets using markers or pens. In my studio art classes, I use a second camera that faces my hands and table, so you’ll get a close up view of the steps. Watercolor basics with Lisa is a series of one time classes that cover the basics of watercolor painting and allows time for you to explore and play with the materials. In this class, you’ll learn three watercolor painting techniques and how to add doodles to your watercolor paintings.

During the class, you’ll paint circles/planets on the paper. Using three watercolor techniques I’ll show you how to create a variety of effects. Next, we’ll dry the paint using a hairdryer, so that we can add accents to the planets using markers or pens. In my studio art classes, I use a second camera that faces my hands and table, so you’ll get a close up view of the steps.

In this series, you’ll follow along in the beginning to learn the techniques. After that, you can relax and play with the materials, or you can continue to follow along with me if that makes you feel more comfortable.

Requirements

Three pieces of 9 x 12 paper. Best: 140# or higher watercolor paper. Good: 90 # or higher mixed-media paper. Printer paper and cardstock paper will not work for this painting project.
Paintbrush. Soft brushes work best for watercolor painting. I use a number 10 round brush.
Watercolor paint pans or tubes. A good starter set is a Windsor & Newton Cotman Sketchers' Pocket Box. A 14 color set retails for just under $18 on Amazon. If you want to spend less, a good student quality palette to purchase is a Prang washable watercolor paint set with 8 colors. It retails for $3.60 on Amazon. I do not recommend Michael's Artist Loft brand, with the round pans, it is very chalky and not translucent. If you already have watercolor paint tubes you can use those as well.
A palette to mix your paint on. If you have a pan watercolor set, the lid usually serves as a palette. If not, a white ceramic plate or several small plastic containers works well.
Two containers of water for rinsing.
Paper towels
Hairdryer – this is a must have! We'll use a blow dryer to dry the paint as we work, so if you do not have a hairdryer, you will not be able to keep with the pace of the class. If 2 people in one house are taking the class, both people should have their own hairdryer.
Tape – Best: washi, painters tape or drafting tape. You can use masking tape, but depending on how sticky it is it can rip the paper when you remove it. Scotch tape will work that's all you have.
You’ll need a work surface to which you can tape your paper.
Markers and pens for doodles – Best: Sakura Micron Marker (I use the 03 or .35mm tip in black) or an extra fine sharpie marker. Good: any brand markers, permanent or water-based or a black ball point pen.
1 tablespoon salt – Best: kosher salt. Good: Epsom salt. OK but not recommended: table salt.
Watercolor paint can stain clothing, so where an old T-shirt or apron.
Optional materials that create cool watercolor effects:
1 tablespoon of rice (any variety)
1 tablespoon rubbing or isopropyl alcohol.
One crayon or oil pastel in a light color.
A small sheet of plastic wrap.
